MYOFASCIAL RELEASE FOR JAW AND NEck
We hold so much tension and emotions in our neck, shoulders and jaw, grinding the teeth, and clenching the jaw, can all lead to stress in this area causing jaw ache, neck pain and/or headaches. The jaw is also linked to the pelvis, with regards to labour, we want to relax the jaw to relax the pelvis.
This treatment will use Myofascial Release techniques of gentle sustained holding to allow the fascial tissues to unwind. We will begin work with the muscles of the face, neck, shoulders, main muscles of mastication and will include inter-oral work to help to relieve jaw tension and jaw joint popping.
Please be aware due to the tension and emotions that we hold in the jaw this treatment can cause an emotional release in some people.
What is Myofascial Release?
Integrated Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the principal that gentle pressure applied slowly and sustained for approx. 5 minutes, will allow fascia to lengthen.
Fascia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, as well as, all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the thread in a jumper.
Fascia plays an important role in the support and function of our bodies, since it surrounds and attaches to all structures. In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When one experiences physical trauma, emotional trauma, scarring, or inflammation, however, the fascia loses its pliability. It becomes tight, restricted, and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Trauma, such as a fall, car accident, whiplash, surgery or just habitual poor posture and repetitive stress injuries has cumulative effects on the body. The changes trauma causes in the fascial system influences comfort and function of our body. Fascial restrictions can exert excessive pressure causing all kinds of symptoms producing pain, headaches or restriction of motion. Fascial restrictions affect our flexibility and stability, and are a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and perform daily activities.
Fascia can be described like a 3D jumper, when the fascial network is traumatised it is pulled and twisted out of alignment rather like a pull in a jumper. Therefore, if the fascia has tightened creating bands of tension three dimensionally throughout the body resulting in symptoms distant to the injury then all the appropriate localised treatments will produce limited or temporary results. The treatment is trying to work along these bands of tension, smoothing them out, thus affecting other areas along the line of the pull. This is why if the therapist is working in one spot you may feel a sensation in a spot seemingly unrelated.
Each Integrated Myofascial Release session is performed directly on skin without oils, or creams. The treatment is slow and relaxing, using stretching and sustained pressure to allow the fascia to release. It is important to relax and to try and tune into your body, noticing if you feel any gentle sensations anywhere, feeding these back to the therapist will help to guide the treatment. These sensations could be tingling, coolness, warmth, pulsating, twitching, emotional releases etc.
